Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainable agriculture is an issue that has taken importance in recent decades due to various factors that affect all countries in general and climate change mainly that produces shortages of products in more vulnerable areas, coupled with socio-cultural conflicts that seems to be spreading because of the gap between rich and poor countries.
South America for decades has been affected by dictatorships unleashing an internal conflict in several countries that took advantage of drug trafficking and disintegrated agriculture in the region. Due to this scenario, sustainable agriculture is important because it is focused on guaranteeing not only economic but social profitability very important to these developing countries.
Need for sustainable agriculture
Sustainable agriculture is a type of agriculture that focuses on producing crops and livestock in the long term without damaging the environment. In other words, it is a technique or method that protects the environment, public health, human communities and animal welfare while producing food, fiber or plant or animal products.
It is a new term to build agricultural practices more inclined towards nature and human beings because it allows us to produce healthy food without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.
Today, December 5, on World Soil Day, we are committed more than ever to the need for sustainable agriculture, a friendly and respectful agriculture with the resources that nature offers. The soil needs a culture for the sustainability of the planet.
Some suitable methods for sustainable agriculture
This form of agriculture moves around three main components or objectives: environmental health, economic profitability and social and economic equality. Mainly, the intention of these methods is to promote a sustainable withdrawal and a respectful use of the land and its resources.
1- Contour plow
This technique or method of cultivation prevents soil erosion, such as reducing crop productivity, deteriorating water quality, decreasing effective reservoir water levels, flooding and habitat destruction.
2- Agriculture without tillage
Also known as zero tillage or direct drilling agriculture, it is a way to grow crops or pastures of the year without altering the soil through tillage. It is an agricultural technique that increases the amount of water that infiltrates the soil and increases the retention of organic matter and the nutrient cycle in the soil.
In many agricultural regions, it can eliminate soil erosion. The most powerful benefit of zero tillage is the improvement in soil biological fertility, making soils more resistant.
3- Drip irrigation
It is also known as drip irrigation or micro irrigation. In this method, the water is irrigated to the roots of the plants by dripping, either on the soil surface or directly in the root zone, through a network of valves, pipes, tubes and emitters.
4- Agroforestry
It is an integrated approach of using the interactive benefits of combining trees and shrubs with crops. It combines agricultural and forestry technologies to create more diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land use systems.
